Postback Tracking Explained: How Advertisers and Affiliates Stay in Sync
A plain-English guide to server-to-server postbacks, why they are more reliable than pixels, and what to prepare before you integrate.
Every performance campaign depends on one question: did the conversion really happen, and who gets credit for it? Postback tracking is the most reliable way for advertisers and affiliate networks to answer it.
What is a postback?
A postback, also called server-to-server (S2S) tracking, is a message one server sends to another when something happens. When a visitor completes the target action on an advertiser’s site, the advertiser’s server calls a URL on the network’s tracking platform, carrying the click identifier it received earlier. The network matches that identifier to the original click and credits the right affiliate.
Why not just use a pixel?
Browser-based pixels depend on the visitor’s browser. Ad blockers, privacy settings, cookie restrictions and slow connections can all stop a pixel from firing. A postback happens between servers, so it is far less exposed to those problems.
The basic flow
- A visitor clicks your link. The network generates a unique click ID and passes it to the advertiser.
- The advertiser stores the click ID with the visitor’s session.
- When the visitor converts, the advertiser’s server calls the network’s postback URL with that click ID, and often with a payout or event type.
- The network records the conversion and shows it in the dashboard.
Before you integrate
- Agree on events. Decide which actions count: registration, deposit, sale, lead.
- Confirm the parameters. Your manager provides the exact postback URL and parameter names for your account and offer. Use those and not generic examples.
- Test end to end. Send a test click, trigger a test conversion and check that it appears with the right status.
- Plan for reversals. Agree how rejected or refunded conversions are reported back.
Keep it reliable
Log every postback you send and receive. When numbers do not match, logs make the difference between a ten-minute fix and a long dispute.
